As Black History Month comes and goes, I’ve found myself thinking differently than I did years ago. My perspective has shifted—but truth be told, I still wrestle. Certain situations bring old patterns of thought to the surface, and I realize that some biases weren’t just learned—they were inherited. Passed down like survival tools in a world still layered in division.
But I’m striving—not just to know Jesus, but to walk like Him. To follow His footsteps, even when my flesh wants to turn back. That’s only possible when my mind stays fixed on a battle that’s already been won—at Calvary.
Yes, we can’t change history. But with God, we can learn from it. Grow from it. Heal from it.
It troubles me, though, how easily we—especially those of us categorized by systems as the “Black race”—will pour passion into celebrating Black History for one month (the shortest month of the year, no less)… and yet we struggle to honor the One who gave us life everlasting. The same Savior who died for all mankind.
Martin Luther King Jr. was powerful—not just because of what he did, but because of who he belonged to. His faith wasn’t a backdrop. It was his foundation. And it’s that very foundation—his unshakable belief in Christ and in unity—that got him assassinated.
We are one people. One race. What divides us is a mindset—a broken inheritance rooted in a slavery that still lingers in how we think, how we speak, and how we see ourselves and each other.
The trauma our ancestors endured is unimaginable. But it lives on in our habits, in our hurts, and in our hesitation to truly heal.
But with God…
Healing is possible.
Transformation is possible.
Unity is possible.
And it starts not in February… but every day we choose to renew our minds in Christ.
